Dan Beall Doc-To-Help's 20th Year Will Be the Best Yet
Dan Beall, Product Manager

Can you believe 2011 is Doc-To-Help's 20th birthday? First developed in 1991 with the purpose of converting Word manuals to online Help, Doc-To-Help took the industry by storm. The idea was simple: drastically cut documentation creation time with tools that automatically produce multiple-output formats from a single source.

That ideas still exists today. We continue to provide tools that allow you to focus on content while we take care of the rest.

Our 2011 roadmap is packed with technology. Starting with the first release, Doc-To-Help 2011, we have introduced translation management (with SharePoint), a build scheduler, a new NetHelp search engine, and many user experience improvements. This year will also bring Help for mobile devices, improved build processes, and more SharePoint integration features.

Managing Translation with Microsoft SharePoint and Doc-To-Help

With the release of Doc-To-Help 2011 v1 comes a big helping hand to those who struggle with managing the translation process: integration with SharePoint Translation Management Libraries.

When content from a Doc-To-Help project is uploaded to a Translation Management Library, SharePoint's translation workflow will kick off and Doc-To-Help will create a project copy for each language you are writing. You end up with an easy way to track translations, provide content to translators who do not use Doc-To-Help, and an organized way of producing localized targets (continue to full article).

  Ask the Expert

Q: What's the easiest way to create API/SDK documentation?
Ask the Expert A: Many of you have been asking me how to create SDK/API reference documentation that mimics the look and feel of the MSDN Library - without writing code. You'd also like to add your own content and link it to specific namespaces in the reference documentation. You can do that with Doc-To-Help using our Microsoft Sandcastle plug-in, and your assembly .dll and XML comments files.

Please see my blog post for the full explanation and a video recording of the webinar "How to Create API/SDK Documentation in a Click with Doc-To-Help". Optionally, come to the live webinar scheduled for February 17th.

If you have any additional questions on this subject or any others, please email me. Thanks, Nicky
