An Open Invitation to Customize NetHelp 2.0
Dan Beall, Product Manager
By now you may know that we've overhauled NetHelp (now NetHelp 2.0), making it lighter, more customizable, and better looking. You don't have to be a designer or a Web developer to get a great looking output. Just choose a theme and set a few options. On the other hand, people who want deep customization can very easily do so.
|
|
If you don't care to tinker with Web development or design, try it out (download Doc-To-Help 2011 v2 or look at a live sample). Its default choices will give you a great web-based output. If you like to tinker, keep reading.
NetHelp 2.0 is essentially a jQuery UI viewer that displays XML content using a master page and a collection of widgets. This architecture makes customization possibilities endless. In fact, we are already using it to create SharePoint wiki pages and are at work transforming it into a new mobile output (available this fall). If you have ideas for customizing your outputs, feel free to email me and I will be happy to provide some guidance.

Challenge: Take Any Microsoft Word Document and Publish a Doc-To-Help Output in Minutes
Brad Keller, Documentation Product Consultant
We often tout ourselves as having the best support for Word in the industry. We often tell you to try it. Now I am telling you how to try it with a blog post describing my experience using an arbitrary document with a new Doc-To-Help project. |
|
I performed a Google search for "sample Word document", downloaded the first search hit to my Desktop, associated it with a new Doc-To-Help project, and generated a few outputs. The article linked below described how I did it and what I saw. Screen shots and video are included. Download Doc-To-Help and use the article as a guide to see for yourself. Read the full article. |

Ask the Expert

Q: The project I'm documenting includes a lot of specialized terminology and acronyms. Aside from creating a glossary, what can I do to help my users get to the definitions quicker?
|
A: Creating a glossary is all you need to do! By default, Doc-To-Help automatically creates links in your Help if a term in the text exactly matches a term in your glossary. When users click the link, the definition in the glossary will appear in a popup. For details, please see the blog post How Doc-To-Help Creates Usable, Interactive Glossaries Automatically.
