Like the Way Your Project is Set Up? Make a Copy.
We can spend hours getting our projects set up just right. From using boilerplate information to setting up variables and project preferences, we tweak and tweak again until we get it exactly the way we want it.
Then it comes time to start another project. So, do we really have to start the entire process all over? Not to worry, Doc-To-Help preserves that work by giving you a way to copy your projects and use them as a starting point.
Just find the Save As item in the application menu. When you use the Save As feature, Doc-To-Help will create a copy of your entire project folder. |

Always Striving to Make Your Life Easier
Gustavo Eydelsteyn, Co-founder
Making sure you can create world-class documentation deliverables in as little time as possible is our top goal. It was ideas that came from
our users, like you, that were the driving force behind the two time-saving features just released in Doc-To-Help 2009 v3. |
|
The first feature allows you to make copies of your projects and the second allows you to open multiple projects at the same time.
Now you can use existing projects as a starting point as well as compare content, copy and paste, and simultaneously edit multiple projects at once.
As a technical communicator you know best what will make your life easier, so please continue to share your ideas on how we may enhance future releases.
Feel free to email your feedback directly to Dan Beall, Doc-To-Help product manager at danb@doctohelp.com.

Strict Separation of Content and Formatting Isn't For Everyone: The New Local Formatting Mode
Dan Beall, Product Manager
One of the hottest topics in content authoring is the need to separate content from presentation; all formatting must be done with styles.
This is good practice. Among other things, it makes sure formatting will be consistent, makes style changes simple, and ensures that global
theme changes can be made quickly and painlessly.
|
|
However, this philosophy isn't for everyone. Some people are happy formatting as they go. Their needs may not be as complex or they simply
may prefer that workflow. With the new local formatting mode option, those who use Doc-To-Help's editor have a choice: Be strict and use the
style sheet or allow local formatting.
What is local formatting? Read more about the new local formatting mode.

Doc-To-Help 2009 v3 Just Released
 |
Recently, we released Doc-To-Help 2009 v3. This release, free to subscription holders, features
a new local formatting mode as described in the feature article, efficient project management features, and many other enhancements.
Download Doc-To-Help 2009 v3 today and enjoy all the new features. |
- Editor Upgrades
We keep making Doc-To-Help's built-in editor better. The latest release gives you enhancements such as easier list creation,
the ability to print files and align tables.
- Local Formatting Mode in Doc-To-Help's Editor
Choose whether to allow local formatting in your documents or not. You can either force the
creation of styles for formatting or allow ad-hoc formatting such as on-the-spot font selection and alignment.
- Preserve Local Formatting When Converting Word Documents to XHTML
If you prefer to convert your documents to XHTML for editing in Doc-To-Help's editor, you can preserve local formatting.
- Global Search and Replace
Edit text once and propagate the change throughout the project with global search and replace.
- Improved Project Management
Enjoy more efficient project management with the features to make copies of entire projects, open multiple projects at once,
and backup your themes and templates on upgrade.
- Google Chrome and Apple Safari Optimization
Rest easy when creating web-based output. We have made sure NetHelp, our browser-based system, is optimized for Chrome and
Safari (in addition to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox).

Ask the Expert |
 |
Q: What is ad hoc, in line, or local formatting? I hear these terms and I don't know what they mean - or why I should even care.
 |
A: Ad hoc, in line, and local formatting all mean more or less the same thing: formatting that is applied to text without using a style. For example, in Microsoft Word, if you use the Bold, Italic,
Underline, Font Color, or Font toolbar buttons (just a sample; there are many others) instead of applying the formatting with a Style, you are using ad hoc, in line, or local formatting. |
|
If you have any additional questions on this subject (or any others), please email me at asktheexpert@doctohelp.com.
Thanks, Nicky
