Microsoft SharePoint is Here to Stay

It's time to take SharePoint seriously. True, it has been difficult to implement and administrate in the past. True, its interface has been clumsy. True, it normally ends up being a fancy file repository with high overhead. But, now we have SharePoint 2010. |

The latest version, released last May, has improved the user experience and administration process by leaps and bounds. SharePoint is now just as easy to use as Microsoft Office; its interface is streamlined and intuitive, and implementation is a simple wizard driven process.
SharePoint has a free version, so it has found its way into just about every company's network over the last ten years. In that time, it has grown to be a platform for just about any business activity, especially document management. Since our users can benefit from that technology, we have introduced SharePoint integration to Doc-To-Help's feature set. Over the next few months, we will be providing information about how to use SharePoint to streamline your processes, so watch your inbox for whitepapers, Webcasts, and articles as we continue to integrate Doc-To-Help with SharePoint's management features.

Ask the Expert
Q: I create software documentation for a product that has several templates that customers can purchase optionally. I only want customers to receive the online Help for the product, plus the templates they purchase. Can I do that?
|
A:Yes, you can do this by creating a Modular Help system. To do so, you create a separate Help project for the product, and each of its templates. Then you tie it all together with a single parent or "hub" project. When the install is created for your product, the "hub" project and the product help should be included for all customers, but the template Help files should only be installed if they are purchased.
|

When the customer opens the Help, it will look like a single Help system, even if they did not purchase all of the templates.
