Creating Context Sensitive Help
Since context sensitive Help is a very common need, Doc-To-Help gives you many ways to create it. The most important thing for a
writer to do when preparing for context sensitive Help is to assign IDs to each topic.
Doc-To-Help provides three ways to do this:
- Doc-To-Help can generate and assign IDs automatically.
- You can enter the IDs manually in the topics grid.
- You can enter the IDs directly in each topic using the Doc-To-Help toolbar.
Once you have generated or entered your IDs, you can create a report listing them or view the header (.h) file that can be found in your
Target's output folder. Additionally, you can find code samples for developers in the Context-Sensitive Help folder of Doc-To-Help's
install directory.
Download Doc-To-Help today to give it a try.

Doc-To-Help is an Extension of Your Development Team
Gustavo Eydelsteyn, Co-founder
ComponentOne is widely known as an industry leader among software development organizations. While ComponentOne’s flagship product, Studio Enterprise gives the Visual Studio developer a toolset for rapid application development, Doc-To-Help gives documentation authors a solution for single-source publishing. |
|
What may not be widely known is that Doc-To-Help is the only product of its kind that includes technology designed to assist in every part of the applications development cycle, not just end-user documentation.
For example, developers can automatically create .NET reference documentation with the Microsoft Sandcastle plug-in, combine that with project information, and create a project information center to share with the team (or customers if appropriate). Additionally, every Doc-To-Help purchase also includes a license for ComponentOne DynamicHelp, a Windows Form control that embeds help into the application's interface.

Don't Forget Your Documentation Webcast.

Bringing Help to the Forefront: An STC Intercom Article
Nicky Bleiel, Senior Information Developer
In the June issue of the STC Intercom magazine, our own Nicky Bleiel writes about embedding a dynamic Help pane in an application's interface, how Help should be designed in that context, and how embedded Help improves usability. Check out an excerpt from the article: |
|
"Online Help is passive, with the user taking the initiative. Embedded Help is nonintrusive and does not require the user to take the initiative,"
says Lynne Hall. "Embedded Help sidesteps the user's reluctance to go to the help system, providing background and often invisible support to users. An
embedded, dynamic Help pane displays relevant information as the user navigates the interface, making the concepts and language of the interface
obvious to the user. It's task-specific, context-specific, doesn't require users to look for it, and doesn't require them to ask the right question."

Ask the Expert*
Q: Can I change the Doc-To-Help icon to a custom image in my NetHelp output?
A: Yes, you can. NetHelp's packaged themes all have the Doc-To-Help icon in the upper-right corner. To change that icon to
a custom image (your own logo for example) use the Theme Designer to specify the new image, as well as its URL and tooltip. I have published
complete instructions in our knowledge base.
*If you have a question about technical communication, email me at asktheexpert@doctohelp.com.
By the way, I'll be at the LavaCon Conference this October, where I'll be presenting a talk: "Designing and Implementing Embedded, Dynamic User
Assistance" and a workshop: "Doc-To-Help 2009: Publishing in a Click." Early registration ends Friday, August 7th. If you're interested, go to
www.lavacon.org/program-registration.php.
Thanks, Nicky
